There are few engineering programmes that can be described as genuinely historic, but the work of the NDA’s Radioactive Waste Management Directorate (RWMD) will certainly be among them.

That’s because the long-term management of radioactive waste is one of the most pressing environmental, technical, social and ethical issues facing the UK today. Significant amounts of waste have been built up over the last 60 years as a result of the country’s civil nuclear activities, and even more is expected to be produced as existing nuclear facilities are decommissioned in the coming decades. We need a long-term management solution in place that will be safe and secure, protecting humans and the environment, over long time periods.
This is your chance to join the newly-formed team that will design, develop and eventually implement that solution. The RWMD has been created to progress the Government’s preferred option for long-term management: a deep geological disposal facility. This is a major-scale engineering programme with a wide range of novel technical challenges. Just as crucial as time and resources, though, will be the skills, energy and collaborative approach of the specialists who join us.
World-class technical and scientific knowledge will be vital, but it’s only half of the story. As an organisation, we need to engage effectively with society as a whole, and so ensure that the benefits and challenges of the project are fully communicated. That means we’re seeking professionals who can tackle new engineering challenges, break new scientific ground, lead international best practice – and also explain often difficult concepts and tough choices to our many stakeholders in the wider community.
Quite simply, the new directorate will be responsible for leading one of the most important, high-profile and technically challenging and contentious programmes around. Now’s the time to join us.
