HOW THE DIRECTORATE WILL DEVELOP

The RWMD has been formed within the NDA specifically to design, develop and implement the geological disposal facility programme. The plan, however, is that the directorate will eventually develop into a standalone, wholly-owned Site Licence Company (SLC), which will have significant legal responsibilities for the safety, security and environmental performance of the geological disposal facility.

The organisation will change dramatically over the years as its role evolves and the programme develops. At this stage, it is impossible to say exactly what these changes will be and when they will happen, but the following indicative timeline will give you some idea of the plans.
