HOW WE FIT INTO THE NDA
The NDA is a non-departmental public body established under the Energy Act 2004. Our remit from government is to deliver safe, sustainable and publicly acceptable solutions to the challenge of nuclear decommissioning, clean-up and radioactive waste management.
We are responsible for former UKAEA and BNFL sites, many of which have specific decommissioning challenges arising from buildings and facilities that were in use in the 1940s and 1950s. Our remit is to ensure that the UK’s civil public sector nuclear sites for which we are responsible are decommissioned and cleaned up safely, securely, cost effectively, affordably and in ways that protect the environment for this and future generations.
Since our inception in April 2005, we have moved to be an organisation that is now structured and resourced to deliver the Energy Act requirements. This includes ensuring that our existing commercial plant is operated effectively and efficiently.
The new directorate has been created to meet the needs of additional responsibilities we have been given in designing, developing and implementing the government’s long-term radioactive waste management policy.
Even as we expand our activities, we remain a tightly focused organisation, committed to meeting our objectives. This means that that we must never compromise on safety or security and must take full account of our social and environmental responsibilities, always seeking value for money for the taxpayer and actively engaging with stakeholders.
